Through DDI’s Self-Direction Program, artist Katy Saas has found a creative outlet that allows her to express herself, build new skills, and share her joy with the community. Her latest milestone, a solo ceramic art exhibition titled “From Katy, With Love,” was on display at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library throughout the month of September.
Katy has spent the last three years exploring the world of clay under the guidance of ceramic artist and educator Jessamyn Go at Femme Sole Studio in Mastic Beach. With the support of the Self Direction Program, she participates in weekly one-on-one sessions that have helped her grow both artistically and personally.
Katy’s work is often inspired by her favorite movies, holidays and foods. She especially enjoys gifting her handmade clay creations to her friends and family, seeing her pottery as a way to spread joy.
Beyond the art studio, Katy is an active and spirited member of her community. She performs in the Maryhaven Performing Arts Program, participates in horseback riding and Special Olympics Equestrian and dives into the Town of Brookhaven Polar Plunge each year with her team, The Sassy Swimmer, raising funds and awareness for the Special Olympics.
The “From Katy, With Love” exhibition stands as a shining example of how DDI’s Self Direction Program helps people explore their interests, build confidence and share their talents with others. Way to go, Katy!
