Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month: Meet Phyllis

Phyllis has been in the Supported Employment Program for 25 years. She is a part-time cashier at the Stop and Shop in Merrick, working 16-20 hours a week. Phyllis had two huge milestones this year. She celebrated her 50th birthday and was acknowledged this past June for her 25 years of continued employment at Stop and Shop.

When Phyllis began Supported Employment Services in June of 1996, we assisted her with securing employment at Stop and Shop located in East Meadow as a grocery bagger. When that store closed for remodeling, she transferred to the Freeport store where she was eventually cross-trained as a cashier to assist as needed. Shortly thereafter, Phyllis transitioned to a permanent cashier position and began training other employees to become cashiers. When the Freeport store closed, she transferred to the Merrick store where she is today.

Phyllis is a dedicated employee and is appreciated and well-liked by her coworkers and customers alike. Over the years, she has created connections with many of the regular customers and is kept updated about ongoing events in their lives.

When Phyllis is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and church friends and loves getting her hair and nails done.
